Introduction to Main Idea

We know that good readers are always thinking!  Today we began to discuss a new topic that we can think about while we read, the main idea.  We can add this to our collection of things we do while we read including making connections, making predictions, visualising, making inferences, determining author's purpose, and determining characters' traits.

We were given a variety of pictures and had to group them together and come up with a main idea for the group we created.  We could make as many or as few groups as we felt were necessary.  It was interesting to see the different main ideas that students came up with.

Fraction Pizzas

We've learnt that "Way up north is the numerator and way down south is the denominator!"

Today we continued to practice naming fractions by making pizzas.  Our pizzas had different numbers of slices (the denominator) and we chose different toppings for our pizzas (the numerator).

Kindness Web

On the first day of Term 3 we reviewed our classroom expectations.  After we were finished we that, we created a kindness web.  Each person complimented another person in the class and threw the person the ball of yarn.  By the end of the activity we were all connected by kindness.  I know Room 7 will continue their kindness throughout the year.

Thank you for the photos, Eli!

Probability

Last week in maths we spent time learning about probability.  We now know that probability is the chance or likelihood of something happening.  We learnt how to express probability with words and with numbers.  Here are some of the activities we did.

We started by making a probability line.

We looked at different bags of lollies and determined the likelihood of picking different colour lollies.  We determined which colour we would most likely select, which colour we would least likely select, and if any colours were equally likely.  After each prediction, we reached in the lolly bag, pulled out a lolly, and decided if our prediction was correct.

We also did an experiment with a variety of cards.  Again we looked at the likelihood of selecting each card.  Following that we predicted what card would be pulled most often and least often (with 20 pulls) based on probability.

We will continue to conduct probability experiments on Fridays over the next few weeks.

Personal Narratives

The first half of Term 3 we will be working on personal narratives.  We have been working on strategies we can use to generate ideas for our writing.  We have learnt to:
  •  think of a place that matters to you and write a story about something special that happened at that place.
  • think of a person that matters to you and write a story about something you did with that person.
  • think of an item that is special to you and write a story about something that happened while using that item.
Take a look at some of our brainstorming and the beginning of our writing.  We'll be posting stories soon.
